Boeing 737 vzlétl ke svému prvnímu letu 9. dubna 1967 a brzy si vysloužil přezdívku "Fat Albert", jistě výstižnou, neboť jeho krátký a "bachratý" trup byl skutečně dominantní. Prvním zákazníkem byla německá Lufthansa, která již v únoru 1965 objednala 21 kusů. K překvapení ani dalšími zákazníky nebyly americké společnosti, ale Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (5 ks) a Avianca (2). Navíc se při pevnostních zkouškách v září 1967, při zatížení jen o 3 % vyšším než byla vypočtená hodnota, zlomil zadní nosník křídla. Výrobce vadu vzápětí napravil, ale je pochopitelné, že tato událost zvýšenou poptávku nevyvolala. Zájem trhu, zejména amerického, o který firmě Boeing ostatně šlo nejvíce, se zvýšil až při nabídce prodloužené a vylepšené verze -200. K její specifikaci byly "chytře" přizvány United Air Lines, které také následně objednaly 40 kusů a svoji objednávku záhy zvýšily na 75.
